A Heart Doctor with a Servant’s Heart
Orlando, FL –Since 2006, Orlando Health Cardiologist, Adam J. Waldman and his family have been volunteering at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission (OURM). Dr. Waldman & his wife wanted to do something for the less fortunate, but also wanted to make an impact on their own children about the importance of volunteering. “I didn’t want to just talk to them about doing something good for someone, I wanted my kids to see the value of volunteering, and why it’s important to give back to others.” During the Thanksgiving holiday, Dr. Waldman would take his sons to a local membership-only retail warehouse club and have them choose foods and snacks they enjoyed. After filling his car to capacity, he would then deliver the goodies to OURM. This yearly event has become a Waldman family tradition; as has the charity birthday party hosted by the Dr. Waldman’s sons. “Our kids have more than they’ll ever need, so instead of buying gifts, we collect checks from party guests and give all the money to the Mission.”
Dr. Waldman decided to volunteer at OURM, because “it’s a place where all of us can volunteer together as a family. My wife and I can serve food, while my kids pour drinks and wipe off tables. I volunteer because it’s good for the soul.” When asked what would he say to others that think volunteering is not important, or if they think they don’t have the time to give back, Dr. Waldman responded that, “it’s important to give back, and anyone can find one hour, out of a month to come in and volunteer, you have to make the time.”

ABOUT NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK National Volunteer Week is April 12-18, 2015. It was established as an executive order in 1974 by President Richard Nixon as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Every sitting U.S. president since Nixon has issued a proclamation during National Volunteer Week (as have many U.S. mayors and governors).
